COLLEGE: Treading water, opening windows, and bursting into song.

In an attempt to liven introductions, the professor asked us to share something we are good at. I squirmed under the forced boastfulness of the situation. I was first.
“Hi, my name is Maddy. I guess I’m good at..um..treading water.”
At least the statement was accurate. And that’s what the first couple of weeks of college have felt like. I’m just treading water; surviving, but not really going anywhere yet.

"Hey!...Hey!..."
Voices from the open window interrupted our conversation.
"Yeah?"
"Oh, hi! I didn't mean you."
Two faces smiled down from the opposite side of the courtyard.
"Oh, okay."
"What's your name?"
I've met more new people in the past two weeks than I have in the past two years. All one has to do is leave the window open.

I stayed in the dorm to finish homework. My new friends returned with a chocolate donut, a free t-shirt, and a baseball cap they had captioned with the words “No scrubs.” I think I’m in the right place.
